Lexar 4TB NM790 SSD with Heatsink PCIe Gen4 NVMe M.2 2280 Internal Solid State Drive.
Lexar International is a brand of flash memory products manufactured by the Chinese memory company Longsys. The Lexar “JumpDrive” trademark was often used synonymously with the term USB flash drives when the technology was first adopted.
So in the studio tonight, we’ve got a 4TB Lexar NM790 SSD. Now, this is a 4TB Gen 4 SSD that is single-sided, and that’s quite unusual because a lot of 4TB drives are double-sided. Now, on a desktop PC, this doesn’t matter, so you can get the double-sided and have that high-performance SSD. But when you’re using a laptop, a lot of laptops have very shallow sockets, meaning you have to have single-sided drives, which very often used to limit you to 2TB. We’ve now got a couple of choices in the single-sided 4TB area. We’ve already reviewed the P3 plus 4TB; now that drive is 4TB and Gen 4, but the performance was quite lackluster. It was only good for very short bursts and maybe reading a games library, certainly wasn’t good enough for a primary drive unless you were desperate. So, fingers crossed, today this will take the mantle of the best single-sided SSD. We will be testing it against that P3 plus and also against more premium 4TB drives such as the SN850x to see if this one can take the crown as the best single-sided 4TB drive. So, we’re going to be installing this drive in my Razer Blade 16, which is a thin and light gaming laptop. And this is kind of the worst-case scenario for an SSD because they are so thin and light; there’s very little airflow, and heat is often an issue. Also, it will only take single-sided drives, so this is the perfect candidate for something like this Blade 16. Now installing the drive is very straightforward. I use a T5 drive to take the few screws off the base plate and remove that base plate, giving me instant access to my SSD drives. Now I’ve already got my primary drive installed; this is going to be in the secondary slot for testing, which is perfect. It means there’s no OS on there; we’ve got the Pure Drive to do full testing on for the rest of this review, just like we’ve done with the SN850x and the P3 plus that we’re going to compare it against. So, firstly, we ran Crystal Disk Mark on all of these drives in the same Blade 16.

Additionally, Lexar claims that the NM790 consumes 40% less power than DRAM-cache-enabled PCIe 4.0 The NM790 employs a DRAM-less architecture to keep costs down and reduce power consumption. Instead of a dedicated cache, it utilizes your PC’s main memory as a host memory buffer (HMB). While this approach may theoretically impact performance, real-world benchmarking has not SSDs, making it an energy-efficient choice1.
In summary, the Lexar NM790 is worth considering for a cost-effective storage boost, especially if you’re looking for a capacious SSD without breaking the bank. Keep in mind that adding an aftermarket heat sink could enhance thermal performance, especially for demanding tasks or extended usage.

Top SAMSUNG 990 PRO Series – 2TB PCIe Gen4
Samsung just announced the 990 Pro M.2 drive last month, which comes in one-terabyte and two-terabyte options, with a four-terabyte option coming soon. Next year, you’ll have the option of a heatsink synchronous, which I would recommend if you’re planning on putting this in your PS5, as it meets the height requirements that Sony recommends. So it’s ready to be installed right out of the box. Back in July, I upgraded my PS5 with the 980 Pro. So check that out if you need a tutorial first. Let’s get pricing out of the way at launch. One terabyte is $169, and two terabytes are $289, with the heatsink versions costing an extra $20 with each model. This is steeper than some competitors for the same amount of storage, but recent models have come down in price in the months after release. So keep an eye out for discounts. I have the two-terabyte version without a heatsink with me here, and right off the bat, they’re claiming 7450 megabits per second read speed, definitely an improvement over the 980 Pro’s 7000 megabits per second. On their website, they claim you’ll get 40 to 55 percent faster random read/write speeds than the 980 Pro. Their reported IOPS is slightly higher than any other brand, with most competitors around this range being around 7300. So 7450 is hitting the upper limit of PCIe Gen 4. While competitors have had SSDs over the 7000 megabits per second range for a few months, this is Samsung’s first competitor to drives such as WD Blacks and Firecuda 530, and Kingston’s KC3000. Also, just a note, these all require PCIe Gen 4 compatibility, just like the 980 Pro. I’m working with an X570 motherboard, so we’re good there, but check with your manufacturer to make sure you’re ready to take full advantage of these blistering speeds and endless victory. Now, after you install it, will you magically start winning your Overwatch matches? No, you need the RGB version for that. But we load in faster to the hero select screen to insulate Widow defeats. Also, know they fixed out a few years ago, but you might be able to tell the difference when you fast-travel in an open-world game or boot up your computer. If you’re used to HDD or SATA speeds, all in all, the jump from those storage options to an M.2 drive to a slightly faster one. So here’s a speed test between the 990 Pro and a Gen 3 Kingston SNVS 500g, which has a speed of 2100 megabits per second and takes around eight seconds longer than the 990 Pro. So as you can see, that generational gap is much bigger than going from Gen 4 to Gen 4. So in reality, a three to four times faster megabits per second rate only results in about eight seconds. One aspect that sets Samsung apart is the Magician software. If you need secure encryption or secure erase, they have you covered here. You can transfer data between SSDs, run diagnostics and benchmarks, and check that you’re up to date with firmware and drivers. It’s a nice touch that isn’t exactly necessary with every SSD you get but gives you greater control over your storage. So what does this all mean for you? We are on the precipice of widespread PCIe Gen 5 M.2 adoption in consumer markets. If you don’t know, without getting too technical, the transfer rate doubles every generation. So we’re working with Gen 4, which is around 16 gigabits of transfer per second, and Gen 5 is around 32 gigabits of transfer per second. In the past year, we’ve seen announcements from Nvidia, Intel, and AMD supporting Gen 5 in certain consumer components. So it’s on the horizon. What this means is that we’re hitting the limit of Gen 4 read and write speeds. So if you know you’re locked into the 990 Pro, I highly doubt you’ll be able to notice a difference between this and comparable competition, especially if you’re a gamer. So the real decision comes down to the reliability, software additions like cloning and data migration, and warranty, all of which set Samsung apart and have for years. They’re also vertically integrated, so everything on the drive they make themselves. They don’t cheap out on certain components. You also can take advantage of the massive improvement in performance per watt, which I’ve said is 50 percent better than the 980 Pro. All in all, if you do an upgrade shortly and can wait a year or so, like if you’re running a 980 Pro, then I would suggest waiting. It may be slightly faster, but you aren’t going to see noticeable improvements in your games. Some content creators that are mega-tuned into their storage might notice, but I highly doubt most will.
